  • What is venture philanthropy?
Venture philanthropy marries the spirit of charitable giving with the principles of venture investing to accelerate drug discovery research in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Unlike traditional grants, the dollars invested through ADDF seek research projects with the greatest scientific prospects.

  • How is your money used?
The money is awarded on a competitive basis to academic and biotechnology industry scientists who conduct drug discovery research. Our funding decisions are based on rigorous scientific reviews conducted by our distinguished Scientific Review and Business Advisory boards. After awards have been approved, we negotiate individualized contracts that identify pivotal milestones and ensure they accomplish their goals. We seek a return on investment for all our grants. The funds returned to ADDF are reinvested in further research. Current assets allow us to fund less than 10% of the proposals we receive each year. This shortfall cripples progress and means valuable research is being lost.In addition to drug discovery research, we award grants in the fields of prevention and early detection. Our funds also help support academic and professional conferences around the world.

  • How is venture philanthropy different from other types of charitable donation vehicles? Our grant recipients are held to the same rigorous standards as if they were receiving money from a for-profit organization. Researchers are selected because we believe they are able to identify viable drug targets with commercial potential.For-profit venture capital tends to be averse to long-term, high-risk ventures. Only a small fraction of venture capital goes to biotechnology companies, and an even smaller fraction of that is dedicated to Alzheimer’s drug discovery. ADDF bridges that gap in the drug discovery continuum because we take on risk that a private investor may not be willing to absorb. We:
    • Fund the creation and development of drug discovery programs in academia
    • Assist scientists in their efforts to create biotechnology companies
    • Provide funding to early stage biotechnology companies with innovative programs
