September 27, 2012

The Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation held its Third Annual Fall Luncheon & Symposium – Hope on the Horizon: New Drugs for Alzheimer’s Disease – at the Metropolitan Club on Thursday, September 27, 2012. With Executive Chairs Leonard A. Lauder, Sir Evelyn and Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild, and Nancy and Mel Goodes, the event brought together more than 260 guests and raised nearly $670,000 for Alzheimer’s drug discovery research. Paula Zahn, acclaimed journalist and newscaster, was emcee. A door prize drawing featured a Shih-Tzu puppy and raised over $36,000. 100% of the proceeds from this event will be used to support Alzheimer’s drug research and related programs.

The Luncheon featured presentations focused on the urgency of finding breakthrough treatments to detect, prevent, and cure Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases. Leonard A. Lauder, Co-Chairman of the Foundation, welcomed guests at the Luncheon & Symposium. Joan Sutton Straus introduced Howard Fillit, MD, who presented a progress report on the development of Alzheimer’s drugs. Special guest Christine C. Quinn, speaker of the New York City Council, made brief remarks regarding the necessity of finding treatments for Alzheimer’s. Bonnie Pfeifer Evans and Alice Shure, trustees of The Charles Evans Foundation, presented the second annual Charles Evans Award to Christopher Johnson, son of former New York Giants running back Ron Johnson, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2008. Following the award presentation, Paula Zahn conducted an onstage interview with Steven J. Romano, MD, Senior Vice President, Primary Care Medicines Development Group, Pfizer. The Luncheon concluded with special remarks from Mel Goodes, former Chairman and CEO of Warner-Lambert.
