Summary:
Angiotensin IV is a metabolite of the
neurotransmitter angiotensin II which also serves other functions in the
body. The angiotensins effect behavior and neuronal function in animal
models. There evidence in humans that therapies known to alter angiotensin
activity are associated with modest improvements in cognitive performance.
Evidence from animal studies indicates that angiotensin IV, acting via its
specific receptor, improves memory and learning without adverse effect.
Importantly, this effect is apparent only in aged animals with impaired
learning. This project will expand these preliminary animal studies to
understand the mechanism of action of angiotensin IV and to begin the process
of development of analogues of angiotensin IV more suitable for use in
humans.
