for Inhibitors of STEP

Duration: 2007 - 2008
Understanding the molecular basis of Alzheimer's disease should lead the way to new therapies. The investigator is testing the hypothesis that a protein called STEP disrupts communication between neurons in Alzheimer's disease. STEP is a brain-specific protein that regulates the activity of several key proteins required for the stabilization of memories. The PI's group recently discovered that STEP is inappropriately activated by beta amyloid, and therefore they propose that finding inhibitors of STEP will prove beneficial in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
