The role of brain interleukin-1 in Alzheimer's disease associated memory disturbances
Investigator(s): Raz Yirmiya, PhD
Institution(s): The Hebrew University of Jerusalem
Duration: 2007 - 2008

Summary:

Memory impairment is one of the primary symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Previous research by the PI and others has indicated that a pro-inflammatory signaling molecule called interleukin-1 (IL-1) produces detrimental effects on memory processes and neural plasticity. In the present application the investigator proposes to examine the causal relationship between this molecule and AD associated memory impairment and to devise treatment strategies based on blocking the signaling activity of IL-1.
