Unlike basic research which seeks to better understand the underlying causes of a disease, drug discovery research is the process by which new drugs are created and developed. This process involves several iterative steps such as the screening of large numbers of small molecules in biological assays to identifying active compounds, optimizing their activity through medicinal chemistry, testing these compounds in the laboratory and in animal models, and subsequently proceeding to clinical trials in human subjects.
