A New Treatment for Cognitive Disorders
The identification of drugs that enhance memory (cognitive enhancers) is one of the major challenges in biomedical science. Cognitive decline is a normal part of the aging process. The deterioration is particularly pronounced in the ability to recall facts and experiences. Currently, there are no treatments that can prevent, delay, or reverse the memory problems associated with aging. Thus, with a global human population that continues to live longer than previous generations, the development of efficient cognitive enhancers to treat these disorders is of crucial importance. This research will test whether a new drug that enhances cognition in several behavioral tasks in young animals reverses the memory problems associated with aging. Additionally, we will develop a new class of small molecules that have promise in treating mild cognitive impairments.
