Evaluating the use of exosomal miRNA biomarkers in the early detection of Alzheimer's disease

We have identified a highly specific panel of biological indicators associated with AD that is both present in the brain and blood of AD patients. These biological indicators are a type of genetic material called microRNA (miRNA) that are found concentrated in vesicles or particles that are released from all types of cells in the body. These particles are called exosomes which upon being released by cells are then found circulating in the bloodstream where their contents can be isolated and used as a potential source of biomarkers. As it is not possible to isolate brain material from live patients, the capture of blood exosomes and the detection of our AD associated miRNA panel can be equivalent to non-invasive brain biopsy. We are developing a blood test to detect miRNA changes in these blood vesicles that may tell us the earliest signs of Alzheimer's disease.
